Cantu Chair
High
The Cantu chair by Sergio Rodrigues, now produced by LinBrasil, takes its name from the city of the same name in the Brianza area in which an important International Furniture Competition was held between the 1950s and 1960s which had the aim of bringing the nascent Italian design industry into contact with some of the best designers from around the world. It was precisely on the occasion of one of these fairs, in 1958, that the young Sergio Rodrigues achieved his first successes by presenting this chair with classic and austere proportions, whose typically Mid-Century charm is enriched by an extensive use of wood. It is available in two versions, one original and lower and the other called “Cantu Alta”, designed in the following year, in which the leather backrest is surmounted by an elegant wooden headrest. A few years later, this seat would also find success at home, being used by Oscar Niemeyer for the interiors of numerous buildings he designed in the new capital Brasilia.

LinBrasil is one of the most famous brands of authentic Brazilian design internationally. The entire production of the brand is dedicated to re-editions of the most famous works of one of the great masters of South American design of the 20th century, the timeless Sergio Rodrigues. Rodrigues' creations bear traces of an unmistakable sign, vintage and exotic at the same time, yet still very modern. Among their main strengths is the extensive use of natural materials and in particular wood: one of the most recognizable aspects of the brand is the use of typical Brazilian essences such as imbuia, lively and colourful, so different from wood Europeans and North Americans who dominate the current design landscape. Among the most recognizable products of the brand, the Mole armchair certainly stands out, a great icon of 20th century Brazilian design.Read more
Designed by
Sergio Rodrigues
Sergio Rodrigues (1927-2014) was the most famous and influential of the great noble fathers of Brazilian design. His furnishings have been defined as a perfect embodiment of the spirit of Brazil: they are cheerful and relaxed, illuminated by a playful irony, yet they maintain a strong sense of refined luxury intact. The woods most used by Sergio Rodrigues in the massive structures of his seats are also typically Brazilian, from Jacaranda to Imbuia, warm essences that contribute to the welcoming appearance of his furnishings. All these characteristics are summarized in his most famous creation, the Mole armchair, awarded in 1961 at the IV Cantù International Furniture Competition and part of the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York. Rodrigues' activity as a designer began in 1955 with the foundation of his brand Oca Industries, active for over twenty years, through which he brought the then pioneering Brazilian design into modernity. Since 2001, his creations have been reissued by the LinBrasil brand, whose entire catalog is entirely dedicated to his work. Furthermore, the Atelier Sergio Rodrigues is still active, even after the death of the founder, and is dedicated to a limited series production of the great master's most sculptural pieces, including the wonderful Chifruda armchair.
