The inspiration for the Bertoia Highback (known also as Bertoia Bird Chair) comes from Harry Bertoia's studies on metal processing and its malleability in fluid and three-dimensional shapes between design and art. Bertoia's intuition on this material led him in 1952 to create in collaboration with the Knoll company an object that he defined as "a real sculpture made of air and steel". Since then, the Bertoia Bird Chair represents an example of contemporary design, capable of combining the enveloping and extremely accommodating elements of the seat with a minimal support, where a few intertwined lines merge into an almost air and impalpable structure. Imitated, but never equalled, Bertoia can be correlated with a matching pouf.

Landed in the United States at the beginning of the ‘30s, Hans Knoll, a young German-born son of a furniture-maker in Stuttgart, proposed to import into the new continent the modern European design, contemporary heritage of the Bauhaus. Died prematurely, his work was continued by his wife, Florence Knoll, who succeeded in establishing lasting partnerships with some of the greatest exponents of the modernist movement. Few years later the Knoll Associates was founded. Today, Knoll is not only a company of re-selling historic furnishings of great artistic value, but continues to innovate by offering creations of the major international design brands both in the home area and in the office furnitures sector.Read more

Harry Bertoia
Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was an American sculptor and designer, a master in the use of metals. Born in Italy, in the province of Udine, he emigrated to Detroit at the age of fifteen. There his precocious artistic talent was noticed by Eliel Saarinen, director of the legendary Cranbrook Academy of Art, who called him first to study with him and later to teach metalworking. In 1943 he moved to California to work alongside two other former students of the Charles & Ray Eames school, helping with them to create the archetype of the modern chair with a tubular structure. In 1950 he was called to Pennsylvania by Florence Knoll, protegée of Saarinen, and signed his most famous creations for his Knoll Inc., real seat-sculptures such as the Diamond armchair. Another great passion of him, carried on throughout his life, was the design of the jewel. In parallel with his career as a designer, he dedicated himself to the creation of popular metal sculptures for public spaces. The culmination of his experimentation with him was the series of Sonambient, evocative albums in which he recorded the sounds made from the metal of his “musical sculptures”.Read more
