Tobia Scarpa designed the Bastiano sofa in 1962 starting from the idea of a comfortable, sophisticated and at the same time extremely elegant seat. A piece of furniture where the structure in solid wood is a distinctive element as well as the loose cushions and the base inspired by the great school of Vienna. The next collection of chairs and armchairs born from this first admirable upholstery has kept the spirit of Bastiano unchanged, still adapting proportion and finishing to contemporary and less formal domestic spaces. The solutions proposed by Knoll company offer the possibility to choose among many upholstery both in leather and in fabric, ideal for combining personal taste with a design that does not fear over the years.

Landed in the United States at the beginning of the ‘30s, Hans Knoll, a young German-born son of a furniture-maker in Stuttgart, proposed to import into the new continent the modern European design, contemporary heritage of the Bauhaus. Died prematurely, his work was continued by his wife, Florence Knoll, who succeeded in establishing lasting partnerships with some of the greatest exponents of the modernist movement. Few years later the Knoll Associates was founded. Today, Knoll is not only a company of re-selling historic furnishings of great artistic value, but continues to innovate by offering creations of the major international design brands both in the home area and in the office furnitures sector.Read more

Tobia Scarpa
Tobia Scarpa (1935-), son of the great architect Carlo Scarpa, has managed during his career to be credited with a strong artistic personality and not to remain confined to his father's shadow. He shared his entire sentimental and professional life with his wife Afra Bianchin (1937-2011), whom he met during architecture lessons at the IUAV in Venice, who co-signed with him all of his most important projects. The couple designed their first important projects for the company of Dino Gavina, a great friend of their father, which was later sold to Knoll. At the same time, they were accredited among the very first designers of two young companies born a few years ago and both destined for a great future: B&B Italia and Flos. Over the years other selected collaborations followed with major brands such as Cassina, with which Tobia won the Compasso d'Oro in 1970 for the Soriana sofa, and Molteni & C. Their career as architects was instead strongly linked to the Benetton company, of which they designed the first fabric factory and several shops around the world.Read more
