Fritz Hansen's Superellipse model is one of the best known historical tables of Scandinavian design, usually best known for its chairs and armchairs. Apparently rather ordinary, it owes much of its charm to the shape of the top, neither fully oval nor rectangular: this shape, called the super-ellipse, owes its fame to an eclectic figure, the Danish poet and mathematician Piet Hein, who in the 1959 he was commissioned to redesign a square in Stockholm to optimize the flow of cars. After extensive research Hein came to this form, based on rigid mathematical proportions, in which he immediately grasped a strong potential for use in other areas. He then teamed up with the craftsman and designer Bruno Mathsson, one of the leading names in Swedish design, to begin producing tables whose top took this practical shape. The tables of the Superellipse line are produced by Fritz Hansen starting from 1968; in addition, they decided to expand the range by introducing a more compact version, the Super-Circular, whose design was also supervised by Arne Jacobsen.

Designed by
Bruno Mathsson
Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) is one of the most famous Swedish designers in history. He trained as a cabinetmaker in the family business, Karl Mathsson, in which he worked all his life and through which he produced his major masterpieces such as the Eva armchair and the Pernilla chaise longue, both from the 1930s, characterized by an attention to the revolutionary ergonomics for the time obtained through a curved wooden structure with soft lines that follow the curves of the human body. After the war, following a long trip to the USA, he also began to devote himself to architecture and created a series of airy buildings full of stained glass windows, among which the magnificent Villa Prenker stands out. The Superllipse table was a great success of his more mature period, designed together with the inventor Piet Hein on the basis of complex calculations and put into production by Fritz Hansen. Almost all of his creations are now produced by Bruno Mathsson International, direct heir of his original company so as to be based in the same environments. Following a special agreement signed in 1978, some Bruno Mathsson products are also part of the catalog of the Swedish brand Duxiana, specialized in mattresses.
