The Ant Chair by Arne Jacobsen, produced by Fritz Hansen, is a real piece of design history: it is in fact the first chair in history in which the seat and back are made from a single sheet of curved plywood. Made in 1952 for the company canteen of the Novo pharmaceutical industry, the Ant chair owes its typical, particularly narrow shape of the backrest to the resistance problems that plagued the material at the time and with which all the other designs that had attempted a similar undertaking, including the Eameses. In addition to being perfectly functional, the shape chosen by Jacobsen - which was very reminiscent of an ant's head, hence the name of Ant - also proved to be iconic and recognizable, contributing decisively to the lasting success of the product. Originally designed with only three legs, it is now also produced in a more ordinary four-legged version. The back is in natural wood or lacquered in different colors.

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was one of the immortal founding fathers of great post-war Danish design. His sober approach to modernism, typically punctuated, conditioned all the generations of designers that followed and laid the foundations for a style appreciated all over the world. He always considered himself first of all as an architect: his products were in fact created for a specific project, and only later destined for mass production. His most famous project was the creation of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, of which he took care not only of the architecture, but also of every detail of the interior design, personally designing the furnishings, lamps and even cutlery. It was on this occasion that products such as the Egg armchair were created, perhaps the most famous and iconic seat of all time, still made today by Fritz Hansen, or the AJ lamp, later a great bestseller for the Louis Poulsen company. He also experimented with the design of everyday objects, for brands such as Georg Jensen and Stelton, but also and above all of chairs. The models made with Fritz Hansen revolutionized the design of the modern chair; according to his former collaborator Knud Holscher Jacobsen "he designed the chairs as Matisse painted the pictures - freely and with pleasure".Read more
