The Lightweight suspension lamp by Foscarini is a surprising “skinless chandelier” that takes the shapes of the rich and precious Murano glass chandeliers but reduces them to a thin metal skeleton. In the operation, conceived by the inventive English designer Tom Dixon, the chandelier does not lose its refined elegance, even enhanced by the impalpable lightness of the structure. The production process of the Lightweight lamp is partially handcrafted and involves the manual welding of hundreds of metal rod elements that give life to eight long arms surmounted by small transparent blown glass diffusers that are found to be able to spread an intense light throughout the environment.

Tom Dixon
Tom Dixon (1959-) is one of the most famous and appreciated contemporary British designers. Born in Tunisia and moved to the UK at an early age, he did a variety of jobs in his youth, from nightclub promoter to bassist in a punk band. Passionate about motorcycles, he learned the techniques of welding in order to carry out the repairs himself, and from there he became interested in Ron Arad's design experiments with metal, which brought him closer to the London underground art and design circles. Like Arad, his first works centered around the use of metallic materials and were based on a post-industrial and recycled aesthetic. At the beginning of the 90s he was noticed by Giulio Cappellini, who gave him the opportunity to compete with series production and make himself known by the great international audience. Since 1998 he has been called to the management of Habitat, the largest English furniture chain, and promotes a radical renewal of the brand's image. Starting from 2002 he decided to go on his own to be able to convey his aesthetics without compromise, founding and leading to success a brand that bears his name - Tom Dixon Ltd. - mainly dedicated to the production of lamps and objects.Read more
