The CH88 chair by Carl Hansen & Søn is another great example of how the great master Hans J. Wegner, who is never tired of reworking the basic concept of the traditional Scandinavian chair in new shapes and materials. Presented as a prototype at the Helsingborg International Fair in 1955, the CH88 chair actually went into production only many years later, in 2014. Versatile and practical, it is perfectly stackable and bases its charm on the thin metal legs that support the thin and sinuous backrest and comfortable seat. It is available in two different variants: in the CH88T version the seat and back are available in wood in different finishes, while in the CH88P it has a padded seat in leather or fabric to add greater comfort.

Carl Hansen & Søn was founded in 1908 on the Danish island of Funen, under the aegis of the eponymous cabinetmaker Carl Hansen. Since its foundation, the small cabinetmaking workshop has experienced rapid success due to the high quality craftsmanship of its furniture as well as the foresight of its founder, responsible for the establishment of many fruitful collaborations with world-renowned designers. The growth of Carl Hansen & Son was deeply influenced by the long-term collaboration with one of the greatest designers of all time: Hans J. Wegner. This creative synergy began in 1949, when Holger Hansen, son of Carl Hansen, attempted the fate with the unknown designer. From that moment,Wegner designed a series of successful furniture, including the now iconic Wishbone Chair.Read more

Hans J. Wegner
Hans Jørgen Wegner (1914-2007) is one of the key figures in the history of Danish design, considered by many to be the best chair designer of the entire twentieth century. He has designed over 500 chairs in his career, including models with immortal fame such as the very famous Wishbone Chair. The son of a shoemaker, Wegner was trained as a cabinetmaker and remained tied to the use of wood throughout his career. Strongly influenced by the models of the Scandinavian artisan tradition, he subjected the heritage of tradition to a continuous process of purification and simplification, making the shapes more harmonious and organic and pursuing perfect functionality. After working for some years in Arne Jacobsen's studio, he collaborated often during the war years also with his great friend Børge Mogensen. His greatest successes came from the 1950s and from his union with the Carl Hansen & Søn company, but his collaborations with the brands PP Møbler, Fritz Hansen, Erik Jørgensen, Fredericia and Getama have also left an indelible mark in the history of design.Read more
