The Up armchair was born as an example of avant-garde design and stylistic research, capable of combining artistic elements with the skillful know-how of B&B Italia. Gaetano Pesce designs this piece of furniture giving it anthropomorphic connotations: a large womb aimed at remembering the votive statues of the prehistoric goddesses of fertility. The pouf sphere is also a symbol, a clear reference to a ball attached to the female foot to which the entire work is dedicated. In this project, B&B Italia summarizes artisan quality and expressive strength, breaking conventions to create a model of pure elegance and figurative comfort. Ideal in living spaces, Up lends itself to multiple uses, standing out both in domestic contexts and in more public spaces. Available in different versions such as Up Junior, Up 50 and Up 2000 it is also present in the sofa version.

B&B Italia’s fulcrum is the Research and Development Centre (CR&S), a research laboratory dedicated to the study of the most innovative materials and the industrialization of production processes. The purpose of CR&S is to give life to the most groundbreaking projects of some of the major international designers.
Founded in the late 60's by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli and Cesare Cassina with the name of C&B Italia, the company has disrupted the furnishing industry's rules with a revolutionary industry vision. Gaetano Pesce (1939-2024) is a figure who does not allow himself to be caged by a single definition: architect, designer, sculptor and artist, he resorted to often very different means of expression to express his peculiar vision of the world and of society. His creations are often bearers of a strong message and reject any rigidity, even that of the industrial series: his pieces are often slightly different from them and somehow unique. Colorful and exuberant, they often resort to experimental materials such as resin and polyurethane foam, which make their shapes fluid and changeable. A poetic summed up to perfection by his most famous product, the Up armchair produced by B&B Italia, one of the most successful examples of the Radical Design current and at the same time revolutionary political manifesto on the condition of women. He was a great friend of Cesare Cassina and together with the brand's Research Center he founded the Bracciodiferro line, dedicated to the creation of avant-garde furnishings. From the 1980s he moved to New York and devoted himself mainly to architecture, carrying out important projects especially in Japan, but he did not completely abandon design: among his most recent creations, the collection of resin objects by Fish Design and the Michetta sofa designed for the Meritalia brand.Read more
