Landed in the United States at the beginning of the ‘30s, Hans Knoll, a young German-born son of a furniture-maker in Stuttgart, proposed to import into the new continent the modern European design, contemporary heritage of the Bauhaus. Died prematurely, his work was continued by his wife, Florence Knoll, who succeeded in establishing lasting partnerships with some of the greatest exponents of the modernist movement. Few years later the Knoll Associates was founded. Today, Knoll is not only a company of re-selling historic furnishings of great artistic value, but continues to innovate by offering creations of the major international design brands both in the home area and in the office furnitures sector.

Knoll design

Florence Knoll studied architecture alongside Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames, under the teachings of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Thus, she proposed for her husband’s company a forefront elegance design influenced by the idea of creative elevation of industrial production by the fusion of art and technology. Today the company preserves and enhances its cultural heritage through faithful reproduction of modernist design icons.

Among the most celebrated products, everyone remembers the Barcelona armchair designed by Mies van de Rohe for the Universal Exhibition held in the homonymous city in 1929, the Tulip chairs and tables, the Womb chair, passing through the tables of Eero Saarinen, the Platner collection, the Harry Bertoia collection and the Marleen Breuer’s Wasilly chair. Years later the collaboration with the arch-star Frank O Gehry started for a seat project that embodies the concept of deconstructivist architecture in the product design.

Florence Knoll also made a real revolution in the office environment configurations thanks to the introduction of modern furnishings and the first office system designed by the Company’s Design Office whose foundation and direction owe to her.
