Flos is probably one of the most famous lighting brand in the history of Italian design. Its lamps, iconic and recognizable, are a permanent presence in the most important museums of the world, and they have become part of the collective imagination. The company’s history is closely linked to some of the most famous design brands of the Italian design, starting with its founders Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina who, in 1962, put together their respective skills in the world of furniture and began their activity in Merano.

Flos Lamps

Table lamps, floor lamps, pendant lamps and wall lamps: Flos history has faced all the different types of lighting, always supporting the free creativity of the greatest designers available and sustaining a constant research on the most innovative materials. Its catalog contains a vast selection of timeless classics, starting from the Arco lamp designed by the Castiglioni brothers.

The unmistakable Taccia lamp and the revolutionary Parentesi are also the result of the hand of Achille Castiglioni, as well as the Frisbi and Taraxacum ceiling lamps, the Snoopy table lamp and the Toio floor lamp. With the acquisition in 1936 of the historic Arteluce, Flos also acquired the rights of the Gino Sarfatti lamp collections, including the historic 2097 chandelier.

The growth of the company continues steadily, first under the lead of Sergio Gandini and later thanks to the guidance of his son Piero, expanding also in the field of architectural lighting. The foundation of Flos Architectural, also specialized in contract projects, extends the range of possibilities of the company, as well as the entry into the field of light and spotlights for outdoor, through the acquisition of the Ares brand now flanked by the Flos Outdoor division.

Flos Design

The collaboration with many of the greatest designers of every age is a constant in the history of Flos. Starting with the great masters like Tobia Scarpa with its lamps Biagio and Fantasma and the brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Flos joined the new generations of design-stars from all over the world as Philippe Starck with the lamp Arà, and Konstantin Grcic with his Mayday, awarded in 2001 with the Compasso d’Oro.

The minimalist family of lamps Glo-Ball by Jasper Morrison, as well as the Ray series by Rodolfo Dordoni, were a great success. The Kelvin office lamp by Antonio Citterio, the Aim suspension lamp by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and the series of IC lamps by Michael Anastassiedes, created on the elegant shape of a fine line, are more recent.
